Insurance and protection
Every car carries the motor insurance Singapore law requires. On top of that, you choose a protection tier at checkout, which sets the most you pay if the car is damaged.
The three tiers
All three include third-party cover as required under Singapore law and 24-hour roadside assistance, and differ in the excess: the most you pay for damage to the car. Each tier's price for your dates is shown at checkout before you book.
- Minimum: the lowest price; you pay up to S$5,000 for damage to the car.
- Standard: our recommendation for most trips; you pay up to S$1,500 for damage to the car.
- Premier: no excess, so nothing to pay for damage to the car.
What protection is
The tiers are part of your rental agreement with SwiftDrive: they limit what we charge you for damage to our car. Claims from other people, for injury or damage to their property, are handled under the car's motor insurance in every tier.
When it does not apply
Your tier no longer limits what you pay if the damage came from breaking the rental policies or the law. In particular:
- A driver who is not named on the booking.
- Driving under the influence of drink or drugs.
- An accident reported more than 24 hours after it happened.
- Driving outside Singapore and Peninsular Malaysia.
- Deliberate damage.
After an accident
Make sure everyone is safe, and call 999 for the police or 995 for an ambulance if anyone is hurt.
- Photograph the scene, both cars and the other car's number plate.
- Exchange particulars with the other driver: name, contact number, NRIC or passport, and their insurer.
- Tell us within 24 hours. We report it to our insurer and tell you whether a police report is needed.
- If the car cannot be driven, we arrange recovery and deliver a replacement where the damage was not your fault.
How a damage claim works
We write to you with the handover photos, photos of the damage and the repair quote. You have 7 days to dispute the claim, and nothing is charged before then. What you pay is never more than your tier's excess, unless one of the exceptions above applies.
Trips into Malaysia
Choose Malaysia travel at checkout before you cross into Peninsular Malaysia. Driving anywhere beyond it means your tier no longer applies.
